Sedation Dental fear and phobia combined with poor chair side/bedside manners of a doctor or staff member creates a need for sedation. Fear is a learned response, as is dental fear.  If fear is learned then it can be unlearned and controlled. One such patient of mine was a famous musician from a foreign country who as a child was terrorized by having several teeth extracted with pliers by a group of thugs. This gentle soul unlearned his fears and was able to control his phobias, without chemical enhancement, enough to receive dental care to satisfy his needs. We offer many levels of sedation for our patients. From the simplest procedures, such as the one described above plus “TLC” and a gentle environment, to the more complex method of general anesthesia, our staff will try to satisfy your needs. The method we most commonly use is to interact and initiate a trusting doctor-patient relationship which is the basis for any good medicine. Usually, this method is enough to satisfy most fearful patients’ and phobic’s needs. Repeated treatment for patients with this background builds higher levels of trust and allows for more dentistry to be performed. Sometimes more is needed and we have several oral medications that are useful in treating phobic patients. We also offer the services of a dental anesthesiologist who can perform IV sedation techniques and even general anesthesia procedures in our office.
